ABOUT THE STUDIO
Suwan Kongkhunthian
Suwan Kongkhunthian was born in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He graduated from Silpakorn University, Bangkok, with a bachelor’s in fine arts in 1976. He then joined a Bangkok manufacturing firm to become perhaps the first Thai ever to work as a full-time furniture designer.
A turning point in his life – and in the emergence of Bangkok design – came in 1989 when he returned home and founded Yothaka. This company were the first designers to launch furniture woven of braided water hyacinth, which they finally succeeded in making popular in Europe in the late 1990s. His style progresses each year as he launches fresh collections to take advantage of new materials and changing tastes, always in neutral colours and clean but friendly contemporary shapes. True to his experience as an interior designer, the furniture is understated, harmonizing with a variety of architectural settings.
